Visit the Big Almaty Lake

The most famous lake in perhaps the whole Kazakhstan is situated just about an hours drive away from the city of Almaty. It’s only 30 km there, but the road winds up in the mountains so it usually takes a while to get there. Once you arrive to Big Almaty Lake, you’ll get an unforgettable view of one of Kazakhstan’s most precious gems. The lake is usually turquoise but changes during the seasons. So if you want to come when it’s really bright blue, try to come during summer and autumn. In winter time, the lake is usually frozen and covered with snow. But it doesn’t make it any less fantastic! Go cafe hopping

Go shopping

There’s tons of nice shopping malls here with all the famous brands such as Zara. But there’s also some local shops like Sportmaster, where you can get all your hiking gear for example. Don’t forget to swing by the Green Bazaar too for some dried fruits and nuts. Yum!

Visit Sharyn Canyon

Although not exactly in Almaty, it’s about a 2 hours drive, depending on traffic. It can easily be done as a day trip from Almaty though. Some people say Sharyn Canyon is like the little brother of Grand Canyon. It’s that’s actually true, you have to decide. But one thing’s for sure – it’s spectacular!

Have a beer at a bar
